There’s something so joyful about welcoming friends into your home and setting the scene for a beautiful evening - music playing, candles lit, glasses clinking. One of my favourite ways to make gatherings feel extra special (and a little bit magical) is by setting up a cocktail bar at home.

It doesn’t need to be anything extravagant - just a few thoughtful touches, some fresh ingredients, and a little planning ahead can turn your kitchen or dining room into the perfect place to mix, mingle, and sip.

Here’s how I like to set mine up:

Choose Your Spot

Find a space in your home where people naturally gather - a kitchen island, a console table, or even a drinks trolley. Make sure there's enough room for a few bottles, glassware, and garnishes. I always like to add a small vase of herbs or flowers to bring the space to life.

Curate a Simple Menu

I usually offer 2 or 3 signature cocktails - something sparkling, something fresh and citrusy, and a non-alcoholic option too. You don’t need to stock a full bar - just a few well-loved spirits like gin, vodka, and perhaps a bottle of vermouth or elderflower liqueur go a long way.

Ideas to try:

Print or write the cocktail menu on a little card or chalkboard - it adds charm and helps guests choose their favourite.

Prepare Garnishes in Advance

Fresh garnishes make cocktails feel extra special. I love setting out small bowls of lemon and lime wedges, cucumber ribbons, fresh herbs (like mint and rosemary), and edible flowers if I have them.

Pop everything in little ramekins or vintage jam jars and arrange them on a tray for a rustic, beautiful display.

Don’t Forget the Ice

It might seem small, but plenty of good ice makes all the difference! If you have freezer space, fill a few ice buckets or trays in advance. For a lovely touch, freeze herbs or citrus zest into your ice cubes the night before.

Add Glassware & Finishing Touches

Lay out a mix of glassware - coupe glasses, tumblers, and highballs - and let guests choose their own. A linen napkin, cocktail shaker, and strainer nearby will make it feel like a proper bar.

You can also add:

  • A little bowl of sea salt or sugar for rimming glasses

  • A jar of paper straws

  • Cocktail sticks for garnishes

  • A tray or basket with a few of your favourite cocktail recipe cards

Make It Personal

Hosting is all about creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere - so don’t worry about perfection. Light a candle, pop on your favourite playlist, and pour the first round to get everyone into the spirit.

There’s something so lovely about making people feel looked after - and having a cocktail bar adds that sense of fun and celebration to the night.
